The Iona Performing Arts Events
There are a number of events throughout the year that provide performance opportunities for students involved in the Performing Arts co-curricular Program.
Artists in Residence - Workshops
Our Artists in Residence Workshop runs for students involved in the senior vocal program. Students from the Senior Choir, Chamber Choir, Man Shed and Iintombi Zicula learn new repertoire in preparation for our Vocal Showcase in Term 2. In 2018, our Dance students had the opportunity to learn from our Artists in Residents workshops run by The Australian Ballet.
Dance Showcase at the Glasshouse
Our annual Dance Showcase ‘Contempo’ is held in Term 2 at The Glasshouse and features performances from all our Co-Curricular Dance Ensembles from our Kindergarten Dance group to our Senior Dance Ensembles. This showcase is a highlight in the Dance calendar every year.
Vocal, String and Instrumental Concerts
Each Music Co-Curricular program is represented at a concert that showcases performances from our Primary and Secondary School Ensembles. Student soloists also feature at these events. The Vocal, String and Instrumental Concerts are held in Term 2.
Big Band Blast
Big Band Blast is an annual event held in Port Macquarie that celebrates the Jazz Big Band style with street parades and open air public concerts. This is a great performance opportunity for our SCAS Equinox Big Band held in Term 2 each year.
Drama Production at the Glasshouse
Our annual SCAS Drama Production is held in Term 2 and features our Year 11 Drama students as well as our Junior and Senior Secondary Drama Ensembles. Rehearsals commence early in Term 1 for the performances at the end of Term 2.
Sydney Dance Eisteddfod
St Columba students in the Primary and Secondary Dance Touring Streams are given the opportunity to compete in the Sydney Dance Eisteddfod each year. The Sydney Eisteddfod is the biggest and most prestigous event of our dancing year for students.
In 2015, our Dancers came home with Gold in the School Dance section at the Sydney Dance Eisteddfod and earned us a place to perform at ‘The Dance of the Champions’.
HRIS Cultural Festival
The Hunter Region Independent Schools Cultural Festival is held at Hunter Valley Grammar School each year. It is a wonderful opportunity for upper Primary and Secondary students in vocal and band ensembles to participate in a large event and in conjunction with performers from schools within our Association. Students rehearse throughout the day in their various ensembles and the festival concludes with a combined evening concert. The event in held early in Term 3.
HICES Music Camp
The HICES Music Festival is a three day selective music camp at Stanwell Party. The festival is for students in Years 7 to 12 and brings together over 300 musiciians from HICES schools in NSW. Students work with conductors from HICES schools for three days culminating in an evening concert at Sydney Town Hall and is held in August each year.
An Evening of Fine Music and Fine Food
Our annual ‘Evening of Fine Music and Fine Food’ is a wonderful evening hosted by the Friends of Music and features performances by our outstanding Music students and small ensembles at the School.
Spring Soiree at St Thomas’ Church
Our annual Spring Soiree at St Thomas’ Anglican Church is a wonderful performance opportunity for our Senior Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles. This is a special concert, which attracts a loyal audience and is a great opportunity for the smaller ensembles to perform a broad range of repertoire in a beautiful acoustic venue. The event is held in early September.
Primary Music Showcase
A great Primary School event which showcases performances by all our Primary Ensembles including our Infants Choir, Guitar Club and Year 6 to 8 Concert Band.
Port Macquarie Drama Eisteddfod
Students in the Junior and Senior Honours Ensembles participate in the Port Macquarie Drama Eisteddfod each year held at the Uniting Church and students compete against other High Schools in the Hastings area.
Port Macquarie Dance Eisteddfod
Students in our Primary and Secondary Co-Curricular Dance groups perform their routines at the Port Maquarie Dance Eisteddfod each year and it is a great performance opportunity for our dancers to perform at The Glasshouse. The Dance Eisteddfod is held at the end of September in Term 3.
In 2019 our Musical Production will be Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Our cast will be made up of students from Year 5 to Year 9 incorporating dance, drama and music. Students have the opportunity to perform key characters and supporting roles, character chorus, dancing chorus, supporting choir and play in the musical band. The musical will be held in Term 4.
Nine Lessons and Carols
Our Nine Lessons and Carols service is held at the end of November each year. The evening is a wonderful, traditional and reflective Christmas service and features performances by our Secondary Music Ensembles.
Whole School Carols
A more casual whole school carols service to celebrate the end of another school year and to celebrate the Christmas season ahead. Our Senior Choir, Secondary Concert Band and Primary Choir lead the carols service.
